Preparing for the tramping season ahead.
Summer is just around the corner, which means it is time to start prepping for a new season of adventure. Great preparation is the secret to a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are our five tips to help you get ready:
Physical Fitness and Conditioning:
If you’re ready to tick off some big NZ tramping summits it’s important to work on your cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance in advance. Start a regular exercise routine that includes cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Gradually increase the intensity and duration to build up your stamina for long hikes.
Research and Planning:
Research where you’re planning to go. Deep dive into difficulty ratings, elevation changes, terrain, and potential hazards. Ask for advice and plan your route. Estimated hiking times, and possible rest spots. Inform someone reliable about your plans and expected return time, especially if you’re hiking alone.
Gear Check and Packing:
Review your hiking gear and ensure everything is in good condition. This is the ideal time to re-waterproof your boots, bush gear, and tent. Make a checklist to ensure you have essential items such as appropriate footwear, layers for changeable weather, a great pack, socks designed for hiking, navigation tools, a first aid kit, water bottles, snacks, and a flashlight. Pack according to the length and difficulty of the hike, prioritising lightweight and functional gear.
Hydration and Nutrition:
Proper hydration and nutrition are essential. Carry an adequate amount of water and electrolyte-rich drinks. Have a plan for refilling along the way if necessary. Pack nutrient-dense snacks for the journey and eat a balanced meal before setting out.
Safety and Emergency Preparedness:
Your safety is always paramount. Prepare for the unexpected. Carry a fully charged cellphone, but be aware that reception might be limited in remote areas. A small personal locator beacon (PLB) is never a bad idea. Take care of your feet and wear a hat.
Remember that the kiwi bush is unique, so tailor your preparations to the specific challenges and conditions you’ll encounter. Stay mindful of Leave No Trace principles to minimise your impact on the environment, and most importantly, enjoy the beauty of this wonderful country responsibly.
